It was August 1977. I was standing in front of the TV on a late summer morning to watch a special report. The TV screen showed a giant 747 in the sky with a special passenger strapped to its back. This was the test flight of the Enterprise, the prototype of the new Space Shuttle program. This was my first vivid memory of space exploration. I can remember the Enterprise detaching from the 747 and gliding through the California sky before making a landing at Edwards Air Force base.
Space exploration has captured the hearts of many scientists and non-scientists around the world. In this episode of En Route, I talk to astronomer Michael Sigel about space, the loss of the Arecibo telescope and the latest update on COVID. Enjoy!
PS: Here is the link to the NBC Special Report of that test flight in 1977 called "Flight of the Enterprise".
